The quartet takes its name from the Fabrik, the building in Frankfurt where the Ensemble Modern and the International Ensemble Modern Academy are based. Since we have met during our time at the IEMA in 2021/22, the Fabrik has represented the quartet’s birthplace and second home—a safe space in which to come together and grow.

Over the years, the name Fabrik has also come to describe our intense and dedicated activity of assembly, experimentation and refinement, unfolding in an ongoing engagement with the interpretation and performance of new music.

Finally, Fabrik reflects our passion for “raw materials”—sounds and compositions with an exposed vitality and authenticity, which resonate with the contradictory, unpredictable, and chaotic realities of our time.
